Curatorial Narrative
P. Fageot's Cycles, 1ère marque française. Lyon is a lithographic poster created in 1895 by the Parisian printing house Affiches V. Palyart & Fils. At this juncture in art history, the rise of modernity was marked by an increased emphasis on industrial production and mass media. The poster's creation reflects the intersection of these two forces: a printed image that disseminates information about a bicycle brand while also showcasing the technical capabilities of lithography. As such, the print can be seen as both an advertisement for the bike manufacturer and a demonstration of the printing house's proficiency.
The botanical subject matter in this poster is rendered through bold lines and flat colors, eschewing traditional brushwork altogether. The palette features a striking combination of red, yellow, blue, and green hues that create a sense of visual tension while still evoking a naturalistic atmosphere. When enlarged to 44x60, the chromatic structure assumes greater prominence, with each color working in concert to produce an overall effect that is both energetic and calming. The spatial rhythm established by the repeating patterns of leaves and flowers creates a gentle oscillation between areas of light and dark, while the atmospheric weight of the print's colors imbues the space with a subtle luminosity. In a luxury interior environment, this poster would pair well with materials like rich wood and supple leather, whose tactile qualities complement the smooth, graphic surfaces of the print. The spatial impact is one of refined dynamism, as the rhythmic patterns in the print interact with the surrounding architecture to create a sense of movement without disorientation.
This edition adapts fluidly across contemporary interior profiles, offering a stable architectural anchor.
